Debra Tomanek

Associate Vice Provost, Office of Instruction & Assessment

Dr. Debra Tomanek is Associate Vice Provost for Instruction & Assessment.  In December 2009, she was appointed to lead the development of the Office of Instruction and Assessment (OIA), a unit dedicated to building capacity for teaching and assessment excellence across the University.  In addition to her leadership role in the OIA, Dr. Tomanek works closely with the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs on campus-wide programs for student learning outcomes assessment, general education, and special initiatives aimed at teaching reforms and improvement. 

Dr. Tomanek is a Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology and one of the founding faculty members of the College of Science Teacher Preparation Program.  Her scholarship is in science education, particularly in the areas of science teacher assessment reasoning.   Dr. Tomanek has served as an editorial board member for four research journals in her field and has published widely in science education.  Her work has been supported by grants and contracts in excess of five million dollars from a variety of federal, state, and private funding agencies.
