Academic Program and Organizational Unit Initiatives for 2009-2010

Overview

The budget cuts this fiscal year made it extremely difficult for The University of Arizona to continue our normal teaching, research and service missions unchanged. Several low degree-producing programs and programs that were no longer aligned with the strategic plans of the colleges were proposed for closure or merger to decrease workload and increase efficiencies. The program closures appear below under Academic Program Strategic Plan.

Furthermore, to sustain the excellence of The University of Arizona, a large, faculty-driven, reorganization was initiated in September with the goal of strengthening the quality of our research and teaching programs and increasing our efficiency. This resulted in many requests to reorganize academic units on campus. With further discussion, most of these requests were turned into proposals to form several exciting mergers of departments and a number of new schools. All reorganizations (mergers, consolidations, closures, etc.) were approved by the Faculty Senate and the Arizona Board of Regents.  These academic unit reorganizations appear below.
