Shan Sutton

Shan C. Sutton serves as Dean of University Libraries and Katheryne B. Willock Endowed Chair at the University of Arizona. His prior positions include Vice Dean at the University of Arizona Libraries, Associate University Librarian for Research and Scholarly Communication at Oregon State University, and Associate Dean and Head of Special Collections at the University of the Pacific Library, where he curated the John Muir Papers and the Dave Brubeck Archive.

Sutton is a national leader in the field of scholarly communication. His scholarship and professional activities focus on open access and the role of academic libraries in the open dissemination of scholarship. He played essential roles in the passage of open access polices at the University of Arizona and Oregon State University, and he authored the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Policy Statement on Open Access to Scholarship by Academic Librarians.

Sutton holds a master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Arizona, and a master’s degree in Humanities from Wright State University. His Humanities thesis, a comparative religion analysis of the Deadhead community and the Grateful Dead concert experience, was published in the book Deadhead Social Science (Altamira Press, 2000). Sutton contends that the roots of open access can be found in Grateful Dead tape trading.
