Julie Funk

College of Veterinary Medicine

Dr. Julie Funk is a 1991 graduate of the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She earned a master’s degree in veterinary clinical sciences from the University of Illinois in 1997 and her doctorate in comparative biomedical sciences from North Carolina State University in 2000.

Before starting as the inaugural Dean at the University of Arizona, Dr. Funk served as Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Student Success at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Prior to that role she directed the Online Master of Science in Food Safety program at MSU, conducted food safety research, and taught epidemiology to DVM students. Prior to MSU she was a faculty member at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she focused on research in food safety and taught veterinary public health. In addition to her experience as an academic leader, she is an author on more than 75 peer-reviewed scientific publications, and is a recognized expert in food safety.  Before her academic career, she was a swine practitioner in northwest Indiana (Wolcott), and grew-up on a small swine farm in southern Michigan.

Dr. Funk is married to Mark Wagner, a cow-calf producer and farmer, and has a dog named Star.
