Melissa Vito

Vice President for Student Affairs

In all of her roles at the university, Melissa has strived to develop a campus community that fosters diversity, faculty/student interaction, and safety. Melissa's work to enhance campus safety has resulted in policy changes on student behavior, sexual assault, and student crisis management.

Melissa spearheaded construction of the $60 million Student Union/Bookstore and expanded the nationally recognized and award-winning Faculty Fellows and Faculty/Student Interaction Grants programs.

Creativity is her hallmark: her initiatives bring students and faculty together outside the classroom in unique, instructive ways, and her assessment efforts enable faculty, staff, and students to understand student needs, opinions, and trends.

Dr. Vito manages a $132 million budget and oversees almost 4,000 employees within the Student Affairs division (ranging from Campus Health to Enrollment Management to Residence Life to student government). Her leadership and commitment to diversity is seen throughout the campus as she is a strong advocate for students using their voices--and having those voices heard.

She chairs the University's Campus Emergency Response Team and is nationally known for her work in emergency response and student crisis work. Under her leadership, The University has expanded its emergency communication to the university community including parents.  Her other area of special expertise involves the use of social norming to impact drinking and other behaviors among college students.

Melissa is also an active member of the Tucson community. She serves on multiple committees that work to battle underage drinking and drug use. She is the mother of twins who are currently seniors in high school and bike rides in her spare time.
