Building Student Success through 2 + 2 Programs in Arizona

Increasing the success of Arizona community college transfer students

Shane Burgess, Dean, Charles-Sander College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and Vice President, Agriculture, Life and Veterinary Sciences, and Cooperative Extension, submitted a proposal titled “Building Student Success through 2 + 2 Programs in Arizona” and was awarded $86,380.  The primary goal of this initiative is to increase the number of Arizona community college transfer students, who attend and graduate from the University of Arizona.

The initiative aligns with Pillar 1 of the UA Strategic Plan in the following areas:

  • Strategic Recruitment for Undergraduate Cohort

  • Partnership with Maricopa County Community Colleges

  • Comprehensive Approach to Transfer Outreach in Key Markets

  • Onboarding and First Year Programming for Transfer Students

  • Purposeful Programming with PCC

  • Prospective Transfer Student Portal

The plan is to conduct a two-day symposium between the College and the Arizona community colleges to determine best practices in terms of engaging students, developing relationships with them, and customizing a transfer plan that meets their individual needs.  Activities post-symposium include follow up with community college faculty and continuous contact with community college students pre- and post-transfer.  To sustain the work, all stakeholders will use current resources including faculty and advisors to continue to engage Arizona community college students as well as assess the work for continuous improvement.
