Regents Professor FAQs

A: The salary portion of the increase is funded by the Office of the Provost, and the operational support is funded by the Office of Budgets and Planning (OBP). Both of these funding sources are transferred annually to the department.

A: The OBP transfers the $5,000 operational support allocation to the Regents accounts at the beginning of the fiscal year. The department must request the transfer for the $5,000 salary increase portion from the Office of the Provost.

A: If a Regents professor has an FTE reduction prior to retirement, the funding for the salary portion will be prorated based on the reduced FTE. The $5,000 annual operational support may also be adjusted proportionally based on the FTE change.

A: When a Regents professor is no longer with the university, the funding distribution will be discontinued. Upon final resignation, any unused funds remaining in the operating account will be available for a period of two years from the date of final resignation then any unused funds will be returned to university funding sources, and the account will be closed.

A: If a Regents professor retires and then returns to work for the university, the salary portion of the funding will cease. However, Regents professors who remain in active status at 50% or more FTE will continue to receive the $5,000 annual operating fund allowance. If they return at less than 50% FTE, the operating fund allowance will be reduced to $2,500 per year.

A: The $5,000 annual operational allocation is intended to be used for research or other professional activities related to the Regents professorship and within university guidelines. Transfers are not permitted from the Regents account to other accounts.
