Jeremy Garcia

Interim Assistant Vice Provost, Native American Initiatives

Dr. Garcia (Hopi/Tewa) is an associate professor of Indigenous Education in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Sociocultural Studies in the College of Education. He is of the Hospoawungwa (Roadrunner) clan. Before joining the University, he served as assistant professor and Endowed Professor of the Electa Quinney Institute for American Indian Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Dr. Garcia is a co-founding Director of the Indigenous Teacher Education Program (ITEP) at the University. He continues to expand partnerships with Native nations to increase the number of Native teachers serving Native communities. As co-director, Dr. Garcia and colleagues advocated for a stronger research focus within the leading education research association, the American Educational Research Association, which led to the creation of a new section, Indigenous Teaching and Teacher Education. He also serves on a subcommittee within the National Indian Education Association working to advance Indigenous teacher education.

Dr. Garcia’s research focuses on critical Indigenous curriculum and pedagogy, Indigenous teacher education, and critical and culturally sustaining family and community engagement. His research is grounded in Indigenous sovereignty which supports Indigenous educators with the development of Indigenous curriculum.

Dr. Garcia earned his bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Northern Arizona University, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Michigan State University, and his doctorate in curriculum studies from Purdue University.
